The National Basketball League (NBL) is one of Australia’s most popular sports and in 2017/18 it’s celebrating its 40th anniversary – one of the longest professional sporting leagues in the country.
Melbourne United is arguably the most popular team in the competition thanks to a long history of excellence and success. With the appointment of our global brand ambassador, Steph Curry, our partnership with Melbourne United has allowed us to extend our global focus on performance (or approach) locally. In Melbourne United we have partnered with a team that has innovation and performance at its core, just like us.
Partnered by INFINITI Cars Australia, United has had a wonderful season and is well placed for the post-season playoffs.
Currently one of the team’s leading scorers - averaging 12.8 points per game - Goulding joined United in 2015, after a summer stint with leading NBA team the Dallas Mavericks, and has represented Australia at the highest level. We sit down with Chris for a quick chat.
Thanks for your time, Chris. Let’s start with the team, it’s been a great season for Melbourne United, but a big turn-around compared to last year, what’s been the difference?
Chris: I think we’ve had another year of having our core group of players together. We’ve brought in a new coach and a new system which has highlighted the strengths of the players individually and we are working together really well as a team.
What do you see as the strengths of the team as you head to the playoffs?
Chris: Currently we are ranked one of the best defensive teams in the league so that’s what we want to hang our hat on first and foremost. We have to stop other teams from scoring, and then we can allow our talent to show through offensively, so (our strength) is definitely defense.
What about your own form, you must be pretty happy with your season?
Chris: Early on I had a few ups and downs just fitting into the group with some new players and a new system but as of late the group as a whole have been playing pretty well. We’ve been a lot more consistent so that’s always good for that to happen towards the back end of the season, and hopefully we can carry on that form.
And the playoffs, do you think can win (and why?)
Chris: I certainly hope so, it’s the reason why we are all playing. As I said before our defense will be a big part of that and if we can keep at the top of the league defensively and shoot the ball well towards the playoffs, that will go a long way into helping us win.
As part of the sponsorship with INFINITI you are driving the QX70. Tell us about the car, what do you like about it (and why)?
Chris: The QX70 is a great car. It’s a perfect size for me because I’m not too tall. It’s a little bigger than a regular car but not too over the top and that fits in well with where I live. It’s also got a lot of zip, it’s nice and quick and it’s definitely a great car to drive! It’s very comfy on the interior as well so overall it’s been great driving the QX70.
Thanks for your time Chris, we wish you and Melbourne United all the best.
